Unifying polar and nematic active matter: emergence and co-existence of half-integer and full-integer topological defects

چکیده
Abstract The presence and significance of active topological defects is increasingly realised in diverse biological biomimetic systems. We introduce a continuum model polar matter, based on conservation laws symmetry arguments, that recapitulates both apolar (nematic) features turbulence. Using numerical simulations the model, we demonstrate emergence half- full-integer matter. Interestingly, find crossover from turbulence with half-to can emerge coexistence region characterized by defect types. These results put forward minimal, generic framework for studying patterns matter which capable explaining half-integer systems such as bacteria cell monolayers, well predicting coexisting states

15 صفحه اولHalf-Integer Point Defects in the Q-Tensor Theory of Nematic Liquid Crystals
We investigate prototypical profiles of point defects in two dimensional liquid crystals within the framework of Landau-de Gennes theory. Using boundary conditions characteristic of defects of index k/2, we find a critical point of the Landau-de Gennes energy that is characterised by a system of ordinary differential equations. In the deep nematic regime, b2 small, we prove that this critical p...
متن کاملTopological Defects and Interactions in Nematic Emulsions
Inverse nematic emulsions in which surfactant-coated water droplets are dispersed in a nematic host fluid have distinctive properties that set them apart from dispersions of two isotropic fluids or of nematic droplets in an isotropic fluid. We present a comprehensive theoretical study of the distortions produced in the nematic host by the dispersed droplets and of solvent mediated dipolar inter...

1. to determine whether difference in birth body mass influenced growth performance in pipistrellus kuhlii we studied a total of 12 captive-born neonates. bats were assigned to two body mass groups: light birth body mass (lbw: 0.89 ± 0.05, n=8) and heavy birth body mass (hbw: 1.35 ± 0.08, n=4). heavier body mass at birth was associated with rapid postnatal growth (body mass and forearm length) ...
DISCRETE TOMOGRAPHY AND FUZZY INTEGER PROGRAMMING
We study the problem of reconstructing binary images from four projections data in a fuzzy environment. Given the uncertainly projections,w e want to find a binary image that respects as best as possible these projections. We provide an iterative algorithm based on fuzzy integer programming and linear membership functions.
